The Joseph S. Calvaruso Symposium Keynote this year will be an address entitled â??A Brighter Light at the End of the Tunnel: The Optimistic Future of Energy and Environmentâ? by Dr. Richard Alley at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 24 in Goodrich Chapel. Dr. Alley is an award- winning researcher, teacher, and author from Penn State University who focuses much of his energy on communicating science to students, the public, and policymakers. Alley is a prolific writer, having authored 7 books, chapters in more than 20 books and more than 240 peer-reviewed research articles. He was also host of the PBS program Earth: The Operatorsâ?? Manual, and wrote the companion book for that series. Alley has spent 14 field seasons on great ice sheets in Antarctica, Greenland and Alaska, gathering data on climate and sea-level change. His development of future climate-change models earned him a seat on the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was a co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
