Fun, food and herbal facts at Homer’s Herb Workshop
Three speakers and a taste-tempting gourmet menu highlight the 23rd annual Homer Historical Society Herb Workshop. It has featured a different menu every year, and the seats are always full. The event will be in Homer on Saturday, February 7 at the Homer Methodist Church, 101 East Adams Street. It begins at 9:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast and welcome. The program ends about 2:30 p.m. This year’s three speakers include area historical reenactor George Bolton, Rupp Seeds CEO Roger Rupp, and Jackson area garden landscaping expert Timothy Bos. Bolton, from Coldwater, who specializes in French and Indian War medical role reenactments, has been a speaker at previous workshops. This year he will talk about medicines and their sources in the early 1800s. Rupp, whose company distributes seeds, will talk about raising seeds and using them in your gardens.
Bos will give tips on improving your garden’s landscape and “turning a sow’s ear into a silk purse.” He is an auctioneer and an estate appraiser and has offered to auction two or three items during his talk. Additional information is available on his web site: timothybos.com. The workshop will also have craft booths and a silent auction. A variety of herbs will be used in the gourmet menu beginning with the continental breakfast featuring homemade cinnamon rolls, fresh fruit cups, herb teas, and coffee. The mid-morning snack features roasted sweet red pepper and herb cheesecake with crackers and crudités. The entre includes cannelloni style lasagna, an Italian style green salad and parmesan herb bread. And for dessert? It’s the best of chocolate, sugar and marshmallows in Michigan mud cake. Recipes for all the featured dishes are included in a workshop booklet given to participants. The Herb Workshop is a fund raiser for ongoing Homer Historical Society restoration and historical preservation work at Blair Historical Farm which was donated to the organization in 1974 by Maude Blair when the Society was formed. Miss Blair was an educator dedicated to Homer’s history and children. She was also the granddaughter of Homer’s first doctor, Dr. George W. Blair. In addition to the Blair family house and out-buildings on the grounds, the Society moved the old Albion Town Hall to the site in 2006, and the rural Grover railroad depot was moved there in 2009. Both have been restored and are used for historic displays and programs. The current project is the construction of a building to house large farm equipment including the Birdsell clover huller donated in 2013 by John Pardee of Concord. Reservations for the Herb workshop are a must. They may be made by calling 517-524-7348 and by sending a check for the $35 per person donation payable to the Homer Historical Society, 9700 VanWert Road, Homer 49245.
