A classical concerto written for a jazz legend tops the program for Albion College Symphony Orchestra's last concert of the academic year Sunday, April 26, at 4 p.m. in the College's Goodrich Chapel.
Sophomore and principal clarinetist Grace Talaski performs Aaron Copland's Clarinet Concerto as winner of the Music department's 2015 Concerto Competition. "This piece was commissioned by Benny Goodman," said Drew Dunham, director for the concert. "Even though he was famous as a swing and jazz performer, Goodman was very interested in promoting classical composition. He commissioned music from some of the great composers of the 20th century, like Bartok and Hindemith."
The concert also includes the crowd favorites "Blue Danube" waltz and the overture from "The Barber of Seville."
This concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Albion College Music department, music@albion.edu or 517/629-0481.
