Description: Masons to Give Recital in Albion and Jackson

Phil and Coral Mason will be giving a violin-piano recital at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 100 Luther Boulevard in Albion, Thursday, May 28 at 7:00 and also Sunday, May 31 at 3:00 at the Jackson Symphony Orchestra Weatherwax Hall, 215 W. Michigan Ave. in Jackson. They will be playing the Sonata No. 1 by Edvard Grieg, selections from George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, including Summertime; A Woman is a Sometime Thing; Bess, You is My Woman Now and selections from the award-winning movie Shindler's List with music by John Williams. The remainder of the program will consist of two sacred anthems and shorter, encore-type pieces written or transcribed by two of the greatest violinists of the 20th Century - Jascha Heifetz and Fritz Kreisler.
The Masons were longtime faculty members in the Music Department at Albion College. They have given many recitals in the area and beyond. Coral was staff accompanist and played for the lessons and recitals of hundreds of students. She also served on the accompaning staff at the National Music Camp in Interlochen for a number of years. Phil taught private violin and viola, music theory, music education and conducted the college orchestra. He is the first Concertmaster Emeritus of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra where he played for 40 years. As concertmaster or assistant concertmaster with various orchestras, and as a soloist or chamber musician, Phil has performed throughout the country and abroad, including Carnegie Hall. He was a founding member of the Julius and Esther Stulberg International String Competition held in Kalamazoo and served as chairman of the judging committee, working with Yehudi Menuhin, Joshua Bell and Josef Gingold among others.
The Thursday program is free and open to the public. Ticket information for the Sunday concert is available at the Jackson Symphony office.
