A surprising link between human history and behavior is revealed as visiting Phi Beta Kappa lecturer Phillip Kitcher presents "Evolution and the Ethical Life" in a public presentation Thursday, April 6. This event takes place at 7 p.m. in the College's Bobbitt Visual Arts Center.
"Hot-button issues like climate change, reproductive rights, resource distribution, death and dying—are irreducibly ethical," says Albion College philosophy professor Jeremy Kirby. "Some philosophers and biologists believe that an evolutionary advantage was conferred upon those with the disposition to live cooperatively. Phillip Kitcher considers the extent to which this idea makes sense, while offering his own take on the relationship between evolution and the ethical life.
A philosopher with special interests in mathematics, philosophy of science, Kitcher has taught at Vassar College, the University of Vermont, the University of Minnesota, the University of California at San Diego, and, most recently at Columbia University. He is currently interested in the ethical and political constraints on scientific research, the evolution of altruism and morality, and the apparent conflict between science and religion.
Kitcher's Albion appearance is sponsored by the national Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholars program. For more information, contact Albion College philosophy professor Jeremy0020
