The Albion College Music Department hosts the annual High School Honor Band for a dual performance alongside Albion’s own Symphonic Wind Ensemble in Goodrich Chapel on Friday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m.
Students hail from more than 20 Michigan schools and were chosen by their teachers to participate.
“Through honor band we can celebrate and reward these exceptional students by giving them a chance to perform side by side with each other as well as college musicians," says Albion College director of bands Samuel McIlhagga. "They also have the opportunity to experience music that is artistically challenging, that they might not otherwise play in their own schools."
Featured this year is a program consisting of all women composers. Included are two pieces by Australian composer Jodie Blackshaw.w, "Hambone” by Libby Larsen as well as “...and then the Universe exploded” by Olivia Kieffer.
"There are so many great pieces of music by women composers that go unnoticed because we as educators have not been intentional in our programming," says McIlhagga. "I am hopeful that by performing this music with younger student musicians, we can help to amplify the voices of these composers through the next generation of educators and musicians.”
This concert is free and the public is invited to attend. For more information, contact the Albion College Music Department at 517/629-0481 or music@albion.edu.
